He walked into his entryway and put his keys and his wallet in their usual place. They did not have a place at Sallyâs house. At Sally and Randyâs house, he corrected himself. He was awake now. He was back among the living. He was her husband.
You did not think it in your heart. You lay with that woman. That woman of sin. The strange woman it talks about in Proverbs. She is a whore. She is not Godâs will for you!
Then what is mom? he replied. What is Godâs will for me if you are such a fucking expert?
Donât you swear at your mother, you filthy boy! You watch your filthy mouth! You listen to me now, you hear?
Donât, his father protested. Donât listen, son.
I have to, Dad.
No, you donât, the new voice said. The new self he had nearly embraced.
You shut up, his mother commanded. You stay out of this. You got him into this. You just remember, you filthy boy, that he is to blame for this. You, too, for listening to him.
Yes, Mom.
Now you listen to me. I know the Bible better than either of these two. That is obvious, or they wouldnât have let you go as far as you did. You know it, too. Just like King David, who gave into the temptation of the whore Bathsheba. You know the truth that you need to know to do what you have to do.
No, his father said. I know what she is thinking, and you canât do it. You have to stop this.
I canât, Dad. Itâs too late.
You know what you have to do to save your soul. He saw his Bible sitting on the coffee table. He flipped it open.
Matthew chapter 5, verse 29: âIf your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into Hell.â His eyes landed on this verse first, as if his mother had directed them there. Suddenly, he could not look away.
It is better that you lose one of your members, he thought. No, Mom, I canât do it.
You can and you will. Better than having your whole body thrown into Hell, you can save your soul.
Jesus saves Mom, isnât that what you always say?
You must work out your salvation, filthy boy. The Book of James says that. The only question is whether you will obey His commands. Itâs not your right eye.
Actual Mom; it isnât my right eye. Itâs much worse than that.
Does one of your members offend you, filthy boy?
He nodded. He was weeping now. Weeping into his hands. He was alone again. His one friend was in the hospital. Not a true friend because his motives had not been pure. His wife was there with himâthe woman he loved yet who could never be his.
Then, throw it away. Tear it out and throw it away, she said.
Lord, have mercy on me. As a sinner, he prayed.
